Sony Unveils SmartWatch 3 & SmartBand Talk At IFA 2014

Minutes after unveiling the Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z3 Compact smartphones, Sony quickly launched two new wearables, the SmartWatch 3 and SmartBand Talk. These two wearables are meant to work with Sony’s Lifelog Android app that helps users keep a track of their day-to-day activities. The Lifelog app will soon have a desktop web interface and Sony is planning to launch the API for developers who will expand Lifelog to other platforms. We will discuss the smartwatches in detail, starting with SmartWatch 3.

Sony SmartWatch 3

Sony’s third iteration embraces Google Android Wear in its full glory. While manufacturers like LG have switched to the conventional round face first found on the Moto 360, Sony has stuck with a rectangular look. The 1.6inch trans-reflective display has a resolution of 320 x 320 pixels. Underneath the hood we find a 1.2 GHz quad core ARM A7 processor and 512MB RAM along with 4GB of eMMC storage. Sony SmartWatch 3 accepts voice, touch and gesture inputs and has an on/off/wake key. The SmartWatch 3 houses ambient light, accelerometer, compass, gyro and GPS sensors. The company claims that the 420mAh battery can last for two days. The SmartWatch 3 supports Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and microUSB connectivity and can be used with any smartphone running Android 4.3 or later. The IP68 rated water and dust proof SmartWatch 3 can be bought in two colour variants for 230 Euros (18,259 INR).

Sony SmartBand Talk

Sony’s next offering, the SmartBand Talk takes inspiration from Samsung Gear Fit for its design. It employs a 1.4inch e-ink always-on display to save battery life and make it more legible under sunlight. As you might have deduced from its name, the SmartBank Talk lets you make calls with the help of its microphone and speaker. The SmartBand Talk does not have the fancy innards like the SmartWatch 3 but it houses accelerometer and altimeter to monitor your physical activity. We think that a heart rate monitor will be missed by fitness enthusiasts. Sony claims that its puny 70mAh battery will make it up to three days without needing a refill from its microUSB port. The SmartBand Talk hooks up to devices running Android 4.4 with help of Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy. The SmartBand Talk which is IP68 certified will be available in Black and White colour variants from this fall for 160 Euros (12,705 INR).
