Chinese telecom equipment maker Huawei has announced the launch of Ascend P7 Sapphire Edition in its home-market. This special edition variant of the original Ascend P7 sports a 5-inch display screen, which is made of nearly indestructible sapphire crystal, thus the name Sapphire edition.
“The arrival of Ascend P7 Sapphire Edition so soon after the launch of Ascend P7 marks a new era in Huawei’s smartphone business. Not only does the new Sapphire Edition demonstrate our advanced craftsmanship, but it also highlights our successful strategic deployment of resources to deliver the most advanced technology into the hands of consumers,” said Richard Yu, CEO, Huawei Consumer Business Group.
According to Huawei, as the world’s second-hardest material after diamond, sapphire glass boasts increased scratch resistance, crack resistance, superior thermal and infrared conductivity, and advanced visual appeal.
Apart from the display, the company has also improved the rear of the phone by using high-tech ceramic, which not only makes it look more premium but also improves the durability.
In terms of the specifications, the smartphone features a quad-core Kirin processor, Android 4.4, 13MP rear camera and 8MP front shooter.
Huawei notes that the Sapphire Edition will go on sale in China this quarter in limited quantity. The details about the international availability will be shared on a later date. There is no word on the pricing.
