One of Facebook’s most annoying and new functions is pushing people closer to their allotted monthly data limit. According to Money Saving Expert, a number of people have complainedabout the heavy spike in data usage.

Mobile users who visit Facebook are now met with the automatic playing of videos. The video ads start playing automatically and uses the person’s Wi-Fi or 3G connection. Facebook started rolling out the feature last September. This has left a number of mobile users angry after it sent them over their data allowance.

“I went over [the data limit] for the first time in May, but saw a post advising how to change the settings and have had no problem since.” - Facebook user Melanie Gillett told MoneySavingExpert.

According to web monitoring firm Sandvine, Facebook traffic increased by 60 percent on one mobile network and by over 200 percent on one fixed wireline network. What drove this increase? Facebook video auto plays.

Facebook has confirmed that autoplay is on by default on mobile and desktops.
