Baidu now lets anyone invest in movies

Chinese web giant Baidu (NASDAQ:BIDU) today launched a new personal investment fund that lets users crowd-invest in upcoming movies and television shows. Baifa Youxi (百发有戏; translates to “Baifa Me”) promises the same eight percent interest rate as the original Baifa fund, with returns reaching as high as 16 percent, according to Techweb.

Baidu partnered with Taiwan-based film company Central Pictures Corporation, Citic Bank, and Beijing-based DeHeng Law Offices to joinly issue the fund. Users can log into Baidu Finance and start investing in the fund with as little as RMB 10 (US$1.63).

For now, the Baifu Youxi only has one movie: Golden Age (黄金时代), which quickly surpassed its funding goal within hours. As of press time, this Chinese version of Gone with the Wind has already raised RMB 18 million (US$29.3 million) from over 3,300 supporters, 120 percent of its target.

The move into movies mirrors just-listed Alibaba’s (NYSE:BABA) announcement in June that it would allow users of its mutual fund Yu’e’bao to invest in movies. The combination of entertainment and finance seems to be a culmination of many of China’s internet giants’ goals: amassing a library of original video content and getting users to adopt their respective online financial tools such as ewallets, savings funds, and ecommerce platforms.

See: How Baidu, Alibaba, and Tencent will dominate China’s movie industry in 3 years

JD (NASDAQ:JD), China’s second-biggest ecommerce company after Alibaba, launched a crowdfunding platform that includes movies, along with gadgets, concerts, and charity drives.

In late April, Baidu rebranded its financial arm, adding personal loans and an interactive dashboard for investors. Online savings funds are growing popular in the country due to the much lower barrier to entry compared to traditional banks; Alibaba’s Yu’e’bao remains the largest with nearly US$100 billion in assets so far.

Baidu also owns majority stakes in two popular Chinese video portals, PPS and iQiyi. The latter has been working with several television studios to set up a content production division to beef up original content offerings.

Sony Xperia Z2 receives a significant price cut in the U.S.

Perhaps the best feature of the Xperia Z2 is its 20.7MP camera. I will never get tired of sharing with you the photos a dev unit took in Tokyo back in February. Of course, the Snapdragon 801 processor at 2.3GHz, 3GB of RAM, a 5.2-inch 1920×1080 IPS display and Adreno 330 GPU don’t hurt at all on the performance front. The 16GB of internal storage is starting to feel a little small these days, but microSD card support up to 128GB should help offset that for now. Finally, the lights stay on thanks to the 3200mAh battery.

In all, the Sony Xperia Z2 has proven a great phone for the few users that have picked it up. The avoidance of carrier specific tie-ins is an approach with a mixed bag of feelings – we appreciate the availability of unlocked phones, however, lack of carrier means a lack of subsidy, so you won’t be able to find the typical ‘$100, or free, on contract’ pricing deals of other phones.

If you are still go for the Xperia Z2 head on over to the Sony website and grab your new unlocked Z2 in black, white or purple for $579.99.

I have asked this before – is it too little, too late for the Sony Xperia Z2, or is this new price worth it for you?

Alibaba sets share price at $68 ahead of today’s massive IPO

Alibaba (NYSE:BABA) today confirmed it’s setting a share price of $68 ahead of its IPO on the New York Stock Exchange. Alibaba lists shortly after the US markets open for Friday trading.

$68 is at the top of Alibaba’s share range, which it upped to $66-68 a few days ago after initially pricing it at a more modest range of $60 to $66. Investor interest has been strong in China’s top ecommerce company.

Debuting at $68 per share, Alibaba – which makes most of its money from its Chinese estores, Taobao and Tmall – will raise $21.8 billion. As indicated by Alibaba’s recently updated SEC filing, that could stretch to $25 billion if more shares are freed up shortly after the listing. It will be a record-breaking IPO – the biggest ever in the US.

Today’s IPO will see Alibaba valued at US$168 billion – more than Amazon’s (NASDAQ:AMZN) current market cap of $149.7 billion at the close of Thursday’s trading.

iPhone users in China rush to download new Chinese keyboards for iOS 8

For iPhone users who found Apple’s default iOS keyboard too finicky, the company’s allowance of third-party keyboards for iOS 8 marked a cause for celebration. But while English speakers (or perhaps more accurately, Romance language speakers) are going gaga over SwiftKey and Fleksy for iPhone, in China, people are flocking to keyboards offered up by domestic giants Baidu and Sogou.

Even the most dedicated Apple fans have complained about the iPhone’s default text-input system, which favors small fingertips and tends to go overkill with autocorrect. But for Chinese iPhone users, it’s even worse. For one thing, typing in Chinese is (and probably always will be) a chore, due to the script’s complexity. Since language input has always been a drag for Mandarin speakers, internet companies like Baidu and Sogou have offered up their own language-input software since the desktop era.

With data collected since the late nineties, Baidu and Sogou have honed their predictive technology to a degree where they can guess obscure words and slang. They also let users store words for later use (this is more useful than you’d imagine), and allow for deeper customizations for features like handwriting input.

Given the constant headaches one faces when typing Chinese on any device, as well as their longevity on other devices – many young phone owners likely grew up with Baidu and Sogou for PC – it’s not surprising to see how these input apps have shot up the rankings in China’s app store. According to App Annie, Baidu’s language input app currently occupies the top spot in the free apps category, while Sogou’s sits at number three (Plants vs Zombies is sandwiched in the middle). One day after their arrival in China’s App Store, Baidu’s app has more than 1,000 five-star ratings, while Sogou’s has almost 3,000.

Many writers have pointed to the large-screen iPhone 6 plus as an Asia play for Apple. Likewise, the keyboard concession could be interpreted as one too.

Somewhat ironically, Apple might not stand to benefit from Chinese enthusiasm for iOS 8 as early as it hoped. The commercial release of the latest iPhone models has been delayed indefinitely in China, allegedly due to problems Apple has faced obtaining proper licenses from the country’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

Amazon Kindle Voyage
Cashy over at stadt-bremerhaven.de uncovered a treat for us today by stumbling upon a new eReader. For a brief period of time Amazon.de showed off the Kindle Voyage, a 6 inch eReader with a pixel density of 300 ppi (current tops at 212 ppi).  According to their site it will start shipping on November 4th.  All we have as proof of the new device is the screen shot below.  We wonder when we’ll be hearing about this from Amazon…officially.

There’s a good chance you’ve owned a ZTE device before

There’s a good chance you’ve owned a ZTE device before, but you may not have known it. ZTE has built so-called “white label” handsets sold in the United States under carrier brands for years, but now it is trying to build consumer recognition in the United States. One of the first phones sold in the United States under the ZTE name is an affordably priced “phablet” handset for T-Mobile. The ZTE Z Max has two things going for it: First, it’s got a big 5.7-inch screen running at a 720p resolution. Second, it’s cheap — $252 unlocked, or $10.50 per month on a T-Mobile payment plan. For that price, you actually get a fair amount of phone for your money — a midrange Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, an 8-megapixel camera, a big 3,400mAh battery, and Android 4.4 that’s blissfully close to the way Google intended, with only a few tweaks like T-Mobile apps and ZTE’s custom camera software. IMG_3155 IMG_3161 There’s a lot of competition in the $200 to $300 price range for smartphones in the United States, not to mention in markets like China where the mid-range is the sector that receives the most attention. Motorola has the new Moto G, but the latest version doesn’t have LTE support yet. Sharp’s new bezel-less phone is also a strong contender, especially for Sprint subscribers, but its screen is only 4.7-inches. If you want a big, phablet-type phone for cheap, the ZTE Z Max will be one of your best options this fall.

Samsung said to be working on its own GPU – how far can they get?

Manufacturing GPUs takes massive amounts of talent, research, testing, experience and time. It is really an exhausting market, which is why very few companies embark in the quest to build these. Good GPUs are pivotal for a good experience, which means other manufacturers have to pay licensing fees and use one of these few companies’ video cards.

If the latest reports are to be believed, Samsung could be breaking itself away from this chain and making its very own graphics cards. They have been working on this for years, according to information given by “Silicon Valley and insiders.” The company has also been hiring talent from NVIDIA, AMD and Intel along the way.

The main question here is whether Samsung will be able to become successful in GPU manufacturing. They are (arguably) good with hardware, software and CPUs, but those are completely different worlds compared to graphics cards.

We can assume nothing significant will come soon, but we may very well see Samsung devices with Samsung GPUs coming to the market at some point in the near future. Even if not the best, it would be a significant jump for the mid-range smartphone/tablet market.

Licensing fees can be expensive, not to mention manufacturing hardware in-house will often save large companies money in the long run. Samsung would then be able to transfer at least part of those savings to consumers.

It would also be a great move to avoid lawsuits, like the one NVIDIA has initiated against Samsung and Qualcomm due to GPU patent infringement (which is ultimately Qualcomm’s fault). There is a plethora of reasons why Samsung would want to make its own component. They must make them right, though.

Samsung is a giant in tech, so they may have the resources to get it all worked out. But please do remember not to get your hopes too high. These are still rumors and should be taken with a grain of salt.
