Asus Teases ZenWatch Ahead Of IFA 2014

After replenishing the gold mine resources of smartphones and tablets, manufacturers now seem to be strongly focused towards smartwatches. The buzz began as early as 2012 but we are getting to see some actual models only now. Motorola has Moto 360, Samsung and LG has one and Apple rumored to be debuting a smart watch in the month of September. Why not Asus, then? Maybe, the company felt the same and has decided to tease us with the ZenWatch head of the IFA 2014 event.

The teaser trailer definitely looks promising because the watch looks stylish, sleek and if we are not wrong, it is slightly curved on the top. Moto 360 was the first circular watch that grabbed the attention of the crowd and now Asus has joined the race. Their upcoming ZenWatch is clearly inspired by the ZenFone series. The curved screen is going to be all the buzz - when it gets an official reveal during the pre IFA event to be held on September 3rd.

Google has Asus as one of its official Android Wear partners and we expect the watch to be running on their smart watch version of Android. The app store dedicated to these new gadgets is already open and we expect more applications to be loaded into it once the products start hitting the market. At the moment, there is no official information related to the Android wear from Asus. But, given the company’s successful venture in creating two different Nexus tablets for Google, we assume that they wouldn’t disappoint us with their smart watch venture.

Of all the watches revealed so far, what impressed you the most? Would you consider buying an Asus ZenWatch or prefer to go with brands that have a much higher presence in India as Samsung or LG?

Apple sends out event invites

Apple sends out event invites

Rumors of a September 9th announcement have been spreading all over the internet, but today we are getting official verification of this. Apple has begun sending out invites for their event, set to take place in a couple weeks.
The invitation doesn’t say much, but we can assume we will be taking a look at the new iPhone 6 devices. Recent rumors say there will also be a wearable at this event, so we might want to keep our eyes open for all the announcements.
Opinion: Regardless of numbers and market shares, Apple has the power to move the industry. When Apple speaks, the world listens… and you can be sure we are ready to hear them!

What is Mobie360 Launcher?

What is Mobie360 Launcher?

Mobie360 Launcher is an app that’s currently in beta. It wants to be the end-all-be-all of your launcher selections and has a lot of features to that effect. We’re not just talking about launcher features, but features you’ get from others apps too.

First and foremost, Mobie360 Launcher is a launcher which means it’ll replace your stock launcher. It comes with three lock screens. The left screen is your device health, set up status, and various other phone statistics. You can also check your device’s security there because this launcher comes with built-in anti-malware features.

The middle screen is your main screen and it features a wheel of app icons. The apps change based on information like your location, your interests, the time of day, etc. In the center is your app expression button. By pressing it you can select things like Chilling, Catching Up, etc to show a whole new list of apps that (should) correspond with the name of the expressions.

The right home screen simply holds the last expressions you accessed. That way it doesn’t disturb any of your other home screens. Across the bottom is your standard 4-icon dock and the app drawer is your standard, horizontal, paginated drawer.

Really the best way to get acquainted with this launcher is to use it for a few days. You won’t see many of the features within minutes after installing. Mobile360 Launcher requires some time to get used to your usage habits, your locations, and all that jazz just like any other contextual launcher.

It's something a little different.

PROS
  • It's a unique premise. There are other contextual launchers but none of them present like Mobie360 Launcher.
  • It has a number of other features like a battery life calculator, built-in anti-malware, mobile data usage calculator, and other stuff.
  • Simple to use. Three home screens and most features are laid out in a manner that makes them easy to access.
  • There is a lot of set up, but the app does pretty well after that at figuring out your routines.
CONS
  • No widget or icon pack support.
  • Beta = bugs.
  • Simplicity comes at the price of customization featuers.
7.5
If you decide to give it a shot then you should remember that it is still in beta. That means there will almost certainly be some bugs that still need ironed out and some features that still need to be implemented. That said, it’s an interesting take on the Android home screen. It doesn’t have the customization or freedom of other launchers but with popular apps like Aviate, sometimes people just want something more simple.

Style comes at a cost – G Watch R to cost 100 euros more than G Watch in Europe

LG took us by surprise with its late night announcement of the circular G Watch R, but there were two important details missing from the official press release – the G Watch R’s price and availability.

Now, thanks to an apparent slipup of LG Germany, it looks like we found out the price, and it’s not good news.

According to the German press release announcing the G Watch R, the device will cost 299 euros, a full 100 euros more than the rectangular G Watch, released just a couple of months ago.

Since the specs of the circular G Watch are almost the same with those of its rectangular predecessor, the logical conclusion to draw is that you pay for the image. The circular P-OLED display may be more expensive and manufacturing costs could be overall higher for the G Watch R, but it looks likely that LG is trying to bank (at least partially) on the more desirable circular form factor.

In our open thread on the G Watch R and how it compares to the Moto 360, most of you said you’ll wait for details before making a decision, and the price is probably the most important detail of all. Motorola’s round smartwatch will probably cost $250 – if the G Watch R costs $300-$350 in the US, it may have a hard time competing.

The German press release also slates the G Watch R’s release date for October, though other regions may get it at a different time.

Qualcomm teases ‘multi-core 64-bit’ smartphone is on its way to IFA

While the first 64-bit capable Qualcomm-powered Android handset appears to be the recently announced HTC Desire 510 with its Snapdragon 410 processor, that’s not the only 64-bit treat heading our way from HTC.

HTC has been teasing the Desire 820 since last week, with plans to reveal the device at IFA, and just a few days ago they even released a set of teaser images confirming the fact the handset would offer up a 64-bit processor. Now Qualcomm has begun teasing the device as well, releasing the above picture with the message “We’re thinking about your future: a #Snapdragon powered multi-core 64-bit smartphone is headed to IFA Berlin”.

The teaser image above perfectly matches a teaser image for the Desire 820, not to mention it clearly follows HTC’s style. As for what chip? While nothing is official, several reports claim that the Desire 820 will feature an octa-core Snapdragon 615. It’s unclear whether this will be the only phone announced at IFA to rock a 64-bit chipset, though we wouldn’t be too surprised if there are a few other 64-bit smartphones from other OEMs as well.

What do you think, excited to see what HTC and Qualcomm show off at IFA? Either way, this is just the beginning of the 64-bit mobile revolution.

Verizon’s new Motorola Luge prepaid phone isn’t new at all, just a rebranded Razr M

It looks like Verizon is getting a brand new phone from Motorola, exclusively for its prepaid customers. The new prepaid device is called the Motorola Luge. What’s that? Looks familiar? Oh, that’s because the phone isn’t new at all, it’s really just the 2-year old Motorola Droid Razr M with a new name.

Priced at $199 for prepaid customers, the Luge is an exact rebadge of the M — not just when it comes to specs, but its aesthetics are identical as well. For those that don’t remember the Razr M, the handset debuted back in 2012 as a mid-ranger and came equipped with a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8960 and 1GB of RAM. Other specs include a 4.3-inch qHD display, 8GB storage with microSD, an 8MP rear cam, a 2000 mAh battery, LTE support and Android 4.4.2 KitKat.

As you can see, the specs aren’t really all that impressive, but they’re not horrible either. Is the Luge worth picking up? Honestly, we’d probably pass. While $200 for this handset wouldn’t be bad in a world without the Moto G, the fact remains that the Moto G exists and is only $99 on Verizon prepaid. The only advantages found on the M is that it has microSD and LTE support, though we aren’t quite sure if that’s worth an extra $100. In fact, the ZTE Warp Sync on Boost offers similar advantages with none of the disadvantages and is just $180.

It’s hard to say why Motorola and Verizon are even bringing pack the Luge, when they’d be better off simply introducing the Moto G 4G LTE to Verizon prepaid. More than likely the answer is that they had extra Droid M devices in stock and were looking for a way to get rid of them, though that’s really just speculation on our part.

PAX 10 Humble Flash Bundle brings the best indie games for any price

Humble Bundle is well known for its awesome sales, in which users can pay any price for a set of games or software. The catch? You usually need to pay more than the average in order to get the best software in the set. We all know and love this open system, but today’s offer is a bit more special.

The PAX 10 Humble Flash Bundle kicks off this weekend’s PAX Prime gaming event (one of the largest of its kind). Featuring nothing but the best indie games at the convention, this Humble Flash Bundle offers some deals you may not want to turn down.

The system is running a bit differently this time around, though. Customers can pay any price for BADLAND Premium, Solar 2, Containment: The Zombie Puzzler and Jamestown: Legend of the Lost Colony Deluxe Pack. It’s important to mention not all games in this bundle are available for Android – only the first three titles formerly mentioned. Those who pay above the average (currently sitting at $3.28) can also get The Swapper and FEZ.

A couple extras may entice you to pay a bit more, regardless of the average price. Life Goes On and Cannon Brawl can be had for a set amount of $15 (or more). Paying this amount would also get you all the other games.

As with every other Humble Bundle, this PAX Prime edition is one hell of a deal, so go ahead and support by buying these games at their website! Don’t forget Humble Bundle also allows you to select how much of your cash Humble Bundle, the developers and/or the Child’s Play Charity get.

Android customization – Screen Filter, dim your display to see in the dark

Sometimes, the pleasures of Android customization require that we put to use small, single purpose apps to get the job done right. One such app is called Screen Filter, who’s single purpose is to dim your display well beyond the lowest brightness setting on your device.

As we go through our day, we often find ourselves with varying amounts of lighting to contend with, be it blaring direct sunlight or the dark of night. While I believe it is generally safe to rely on the default device options or creating your own profiles using apps like Lux or Tasker to adequately increase your display brightness, few devices, on the other hand, do a great job of handling low light situations.

When the only light in the room is the gentle glow of all of your power adapters, even the lowest brightness setting on most Android devices feels a little like staring at the Sun. Since this searing pain is not enough to stop us from using our devices, why don’t we take a look at how to use Screen Filter to tone things down a bit.

Before we get started

[IMG]Screen Filter is a free app in the Google Play Store. If you like the app and wish to offer up a donation to the developer, in a unique approach, the developer asks that you instead make a donation to Wikipedia.

Great news, Screen Filter is also controllable as a Tasker plugin. This is just extra functionality which I will only briefly show off here today, but you’ll need to drop $2.99 on Tasker in the Google Play Store if you want to play along that part.

Using Screen Filter to dim your display

As mentioned, Screen Filter is made only to dim your display, which it does by placing a semi transparent black screen over top of your existing content. This is not a hardware related solution, and should not provide any battery saving benefits, but at least it let’s you use your device at night.

Warning: Screen Filter can be used to completely black out your display. Please be careful how you use it, as you may be required to pull the battery on your device to recover. On the bright side (no pun intended,) Screen Filter should be your first notification in your Notification bar, you may be able to blindly swipe and tap that to deactivate without having to restart the device.

Screen Filter can be used in three different ways. First, you can go into your apps and choose it from there. Second, and most common, you can set pre-configured widgets on your Homescreens. Last, my personal favorite, Screen Filter can be controlled and configured through Tasker. Let’s look at how to work these three options.

Activate Screen Filter from the app drawer

This is pretty simple, open your app drawer by tapping the “all apps” button usually located just above the Home button on your device. Scroll through to find the Screen Filter icon and tap to activate.

Screen Filter will activate at a default value, somewhat out of your control, and remain there until you tap the app icon once again to turn it off. If you like this filter level, feel free to put a shortcut to the app on your Homescreen for easy access.

If the value is not good for you, you can pull down the Notification bar and tap the Screen Filter notification to enter the settings screen. Slide the scroll bar to the desired value and tap the system back button to save and exit.

Setup a Screen Filter widget

Likely the most common use of Screen Filter is through the Homescreen widget. This is very simple as well, drop the widget onto your Homescreen and you will be presented a settings page.

Slide the scroll bar until you reach an appropriate filter level.

Tap Save.

You can do this multiple times, setting different values for each widget.

To toggle Screen Filter off and on, simply tap the widget.

Setup Screen Filter in Tasker

Now for my favorite. If you are an avid Tasker user, I just need mention that Screen Filter is a Plugin for Tasker. If you are not an avid Tasker user, no worries, we’re just going to create an action within a Task that activates Screen Filter.

I will leave it to you to follow along previous tutorials to create a Profile in Tasker for this project and to create your Task within Tasker to get started. From there you’ll add a new action.

Choose Plugin.

Choose Screen Filter.

Tap the pencil next to Configure.

Slide the scroll bar to the desired value.

Tap Save.

Tap the system back button to save and exit.

What’s next

Let’s quickly talk about the Screen Filter notification that pops up when the app is activate. When you start Screen Filter from the app drawer, tapping the notification will both deactivate the display dimming and take you to the settings screen. When you activate Screen Filter from a widget or through Tasker, tapping the notification will only deactivate the filter.

Did someone say Tasker? Why of course I did, and now you may be wondering how and when you might activate Screen Filter. Let me give you just two ideas:

First, Screen Filter is great at night, obviously. If you’ve been following along my Tasker tutorials in our Android customization series, you already know how to create a night time mode for your device. If your night mode appropriately coincides with lights out in your home, it would be a simple thing to add Screen Filter to your sleepy time Task in Tasker, thus dimming your display along with muting the ringer and more.

Second thought, perhaps you looked into using Tasker with Trigger when I covered it a few weeks back. If you’ve got a spare NFC tag kicking around, why not program it to fire up Screen Filter? A sticker style NFC tag placed close to the bed makes it super simple to quickly tap to dim your display.

Prevent device reboots: I warned you above that Screen Filter can be set to a value that completely blacks out your display, often requiring a reboot to recover. I pose to you that an NFC tag made to toggle on and off Screen Filter would serve as a backup recovery plan in the event of a blackout.

Next Week

Starting next week on our Android customization series we will begin to look at some battery saving tools, tips and tricks. If you are so inclined, you may want to start tracking your battery life, so you have a baseline to compare to after we make some tweaks. We don’t want to go too crazy here, maybe just snap a screenshot of your Battery stats at the end of each day and we can compare them later.

Respecting that apps like Lux offer a full featured display brightness solution with some awesome configurations and color filters, how do you feel Screen Filter stacks up for your needs?
